etsy sale and style preview

Okay so, I'm going to be getting into gear and restocking the shop, HoneyBee Vintage on Etsy, within the next two weeks. I have a bunch of stuff I've accumulated and after one week I'll have the time to shoot everything and post 'em up. In the meantime the stuff in my shop is discounted 40% off! There are only a few things left, so have at it!

Here's a preview, too, of things I am coveting, and the things that have inspired my vintage finds. So once I have the listings up, you'll find things similar to what you see below, but for much much cheaper! Chiffon, denim, wide leg jeans, florals, peter pan collars, round sunglasses, navy/sailor inspired tops, shorts, polka dots, dusty rose, yellow, crop tops! (These photos are from Topshop, Shopbop, Madewell, Dahlia, and Urban Outfitters).

frankie

So I just stumbled upon this adorable magazine called frankie from Australia. It's super cute and the editorials are always beautiful, just like most Aussie/New Zealand fashion (as I've found out from following Liebemarlene and her obsession with the fashion there).

Their online website is darling as well, with a music player and a blog on the main page. Check it out. You can also subscribe to it on the site, but it's expensive, especially if you don't live in Australia. Also, if you sign up for it, they send you love letters in your inbox :)

too much

So I have lots to do. Reading, editing, story writing, making J's VDay present, cleaning/decorating my room, working, papers. I also have two update posts to write here; one being my Santa Barbara trip with J and the other being the Writer's conference I just got back from in D.C. Those will come later. In the meantime, here's a little post on this cute vintage space out in LA called Space 15 Twenty. My friend and coworker Aaliyah modeled for them for the opening of the store The Loved One Pop Up Shop (from Hannah of Hannah and Landon. Check out her Etsy shop here.) recently, where she was all prettied up in cute lingerie and sat on a swing in the middle of the floor. Super cute. Here's some pictures from Space 15 Twenty's flickr. Click on the link to see all of them. And as usual, click on the pics in my entry to view 'em bigger (Sometimes I don't like big photo entries).

Cute lil Aaliyah.

Our friends Alia and Jerod went to see her. I wish I could have gone but I was in DC. :(

If you're in the LA area, check it out. Just in time for valentine's day :) I think Aaliyah and I will be there Wednesday! See ya there, perhaps!

My real-life friend from my days in Orange County and blogger/youtube fashion sensation, Christine, has been a pal and plugged my blog and Etsy shop on her YouTube channel here. She does outfit videos, hair and makeup tips, the works. Right now she does these uniform videos where one key piece rolls over from the outfit before, sort of in keeping with the 30 for 30, in that it helps when you're on a tight budget. Check the video for Uniform #7 down below, inspired by yours truly. :)

the minor fall and the major lift

Magnetic Fields - With Whom to Dance
Beirut - Hallelujah
The 6ths - You You You You You Katherine Whalen singing a song by Stephin Merritt (of Magnetic Fields)
Noah and the Whale - Five Years Time
Jens Lekman - La Strada Nel Bosco

Sorry for the lack of posting, but I've been super tired lately, even though this weekend I did a whole lot of nothing except eat. Eat... and play my new ukulele! It's pretty pretty. I've already semi-learned a few songs, like "Hallelujah", and "Postcards", and "New Soul". I lovelovelove it! And in honor and reverence of that love, my mini playlist is comprised of all ukulele songs. There are plenty more by both Beirut and Magnetic Fields but I didn't want to make it heavy on one artist, so look 'em up!

I also spent the weekend with four crazy little dollfaced girls, which is why I'm so tired. I'm glad I have the day off today. It was a nice and pleasant surprise. I've decided to spend it cleaning, running, yoga-ing, and crafting. Doesn't sound very relaxing, but it is. Really.

Here's a picture of my new little beaut, followed by some pictures from the weekend and a ukulele session from Yael Naim. (I should have thought to take some outfit pictures. Nonetheless, I'm wearing the oversized chiffon blouse in bone with the navy tap shorts from American Apparel and then the vintage cutout schoolgirl dress from California Select.)

I hope your 4th of July was splendid! What did you all do?

naive spelled backwards

"There's no point to any of this. It's all just a... a random lottery of meaningless tragedy and a series of near escapes. So I take pleasure in the details. You know... a Quarter-Pounder with cheese, those are good, the sky about ten minutes before it starts to rain, the moment where your laughter becomes a cackle... and I, I sit back and I smoke my Camel Straights and I ride my own melt. " --Reality Bites

Today is graduation day.

I don't feel any different, or as if I've accomplished anything and that is why I didn't want to walk, or draw attention to myself. As usual. I don't even know anyone I'm walking with. I'll be bringing a book with me. Etgar Keret's The Nimrod Flip Out. Maybe when I get my M.F.A. and have a publish-worthy book of my own, I can say differently, but right now, I'm still a writer whose last class in her schooling career was an earthquake class. Le suck.

I'm not expecting anyone to get me any graduation presents or greetings-- aside from the obligatory monetary donations from relatives whose names I don't really know, or know how to pronounce-- and it's okay because I'm used to it. I mean, it's not like I'm Quinn Morgendorffer or anything. Definitely more of a Daria. I don't really have many friends to get/make me anything anyway. If anything, I expect this whole graduation thing to pass by as hardly a mere blip on the radar. Like my life. :) I really don't mind. I guess.

Some commencement music, if you will.

Wild World - Cat Stevens

Advice to the Graduate - Silver Jews

And so, a present to me. From me. In the form of LOLcats. And Ghost World.

Also I'm making myself a gift of a headband/crown of flowers (like this one on Anna Karina). Crafty handmade gifts are always best. I'm really excited about it. I'm trying to work out how not to make it too big and garish and overpowering, but delicate and pretty while still having it stand out. I think a lot of pulling off the look has to do with wearing kind of understated things with it, too.

edit:: So I actually got some congrats from my dollface of a coworker via Facebook (disguised in a demand for more baked goods)::
Aaliyah Eitapence: Congratulations on graduating! You are a shining star in the sky! And make me cookies!♥

Isn't she a cute little baby? This is all American Apparel wear, by the by. ;)

I was really going to be somebody by the time I was 23.
Honey, all you have to be by the time you're 23 is yourself.

the buying of things

(entry the third)
I'm on the road to decreasing my spending significantly, so of course I had to go on one last big binge. Can't quit cold turkey right? Easing into it, I first bought this beautiful beautiful dress I'd been eyeing online at Anthropologie.com. And in the catalog... and the store... which is just a few stores down from where I work at American Apparel. I have issues, yes I know. Anyway, I finally allowed myself to try it on, which was a big mistake because my love just grew into obsession. And so I purchased it. Good thing is, my darling mama said she would make it my grad present so I got reimbursed for that purchase. Any suggestions on shoes to go with?

So here I am in the dressing room at Anthropologie going back and forth about whether or not I should even buy it. In the end I caved, and I'm glad. This is what I'll be wearing on graduation day, and aren't I just so sad about having to cover it up in a big black tent of a gown?

The other thing I purchased was a tiny miracle because it should have been a 99$ splurge but it came out tons cheaper, especially since I got a 20$ gift card at guitar center for being such a loyal shopper. Now I own my acoustic electric guitar Kevbo, a tambourine, a harmonica, and a new uke (the first two instruments listed of which I can actually play. I have yet to attempt the hacking and spitting and gagging of harmonica playing)! My little lovely ukulele that I can play "Postcards From Italy" on. I've been wanting one for ages-- and I do have a dinky toy one that does actually function and plays semi-well, but it doesn't hold a candle to this beaut!

So in reality, it wasn't much of a spending binge as I thought, right? I need to start saving money though, for a new, better-functioning car, AND and grad school. Next fall I'll be working on my first collection of stories and learning to be an amazing creative writing professor a la Moffett, at (hopefully) Portland or SF or somewhere equally wondrous. Wish me luck!

i want to go to there

I'm loving the whole preppy resurgence for Spring/Summer. It's definitely true that fashion is cyclical. Things just get recycled and reinvented. Urban Outfitters has their current concept of "New Prep" which I think is a great mixing of vintage(esque) and preppy. Right up my alley. My favorite stores are JCrew (where I worked for longer than I care to say) and Anthropologie, both of which have always had a preppy vintage vibe, so I'm glad to see that aesthetic more accessible, possibly cheaper. Even American Apparel, my current place of employ, has been pushing the preppy look (calling it the New Standards), and I think the way they're going about it is super smart. The thing with bringing back old styles is that they have to be reinvented, and AA owner, Dov, is a smart man who knows all about reinvention. What makes an old style new and fresh is to pair it up with things that contrast with it, and boy, does the rest of American Apparel's inventory clash with the concept of preppy. But it works.

Also, I'd like to take pictures of myself in my cute outfits I have-- like all you other fashion bloggers do-- but I would feel silly and lame because I am not cute like you all (only my clothes are cute) and I don't have someone to take my pictures for me like you guys do. And I would feel mighty silly even if I did.

As far as what I'm hoping to add to my ever-growing collection right now, I'm big into brogues, stripes (which I already have a lot of), dresses (floral, denim, chambray-- I likes it all) and AND, the big one that I'm on the hunt for, is some slouchy tailored/tapered pants that I can roll up to the ankle. Click on this link to see a new pant from AA that I think is super cute, and another one here. It doesn't look good on the model at all but I tried it on at work and I heart them. And then, not necessarily denim, but along the lines of these pants here.

Yis, please.

I'm also still on the lookout for the perfect bike. I think I need to stop being so picky and particular and go for something practical. (How's that for alliteration?) This bike is cute and simple but hard to find on the cheap in the US. Darn you Europeans and your stylish everything. The girl in this picture, so lucky. Even her dress is adorable. (This is an oldschool shot from The Sartorialist. lovelovelove.)

I'm working on a new playlist for you all this week. It's gonna be a good'un. Here's a preview (and a hint as to the theme of the playlist, if you want to guess-- the original artist is not Sparklehorse):
