hug o' war

Hey, lovelies! I just got done making two pumpkin cheesecakes (recipe courtesy of my sister, Tess) and a batch of pumpkin spice cookies with cream cheese frosting (from a recipe I got from Rhiannon of Liebemarlene Vintage) for tomorrow. I'll post up pictures and the recipes tomorrow when I get a chance. I am exhausted. Baking is super involved but I like to do it. And it makes everything smell delicious. :)

I am thankful for plenty of things: J, life, adorable nieces, my sister's new job at Madewell, new (old) books to read, Calvin & Hobbes, salted caramel hot chocolate, you!, my mama, Neutral Milk Hotel on vinyl coming to my doorstep very soon, and keyboard cat!

How 'bout you?

accepts insults and injuries.

Grace doesn't try to please itself. Accepts being slighted, forgotten, disliked. Accepts insults and injuries.
Nature only wants to please itself. Get others to please it too. Likes to lord it over them. To have its own way. It finds reasons to be unhappy when all the world is shining around it. And love is smiling through all things.
No one who loves the way of grace ever comes to a bad end.

Say what you will, Anonymous, if it makes you feel good about yourself. Hateful, hateful.

Anyway, I've finally gotten into a creative writerly mood, so I can work on cranking out 30-40 pages for my master's thesis in the next month. Over the break, I expect to have at least a story and a half done before winter quarter starts up.

a musical evening

Hey, y'all! This week is my last week of being super busy with school stuff for a while. In the meantime, here's a lovely musical interlude from Emily! Also, check out my Etsy shop, HoneyBee Vintage. Plenty of great skirts and pants and fall/winter sweaters. Coming soon: Christmas sweaters galore!

Hi Sometimes Almost Always readers, I'm Emily from Ruby Slipper Journeys!

I think Melissa asked me for a guest post over two months ago, and I've been unbelievably flaky. At the beginning, I had a thesis to finish, but then I got a case of bloggers block. She said it should be food or music themed, and while I love food, no sooner did I promise something along those lines than I realized I wasn't eating out much any more, and that my home-cooking wasn't exactly photogenic. And music... well, I generally say I have no soul and don't really care about music too much...

However, I would really have no soul not to care about Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona, perhaps the most beautiful building in the city. You can take guided tours of this modernist masterpiece, but it doesn't cost much more to actually see a concert there. So I went for a wonderful evening of classical guitar by Paraguayan guitarrist Berta Rojas. I wore a vintage black and yellow eyelet dress (which you can see better in this post). The music was perfect, and the surroundings even more perfect... I just wish I hadn't worked just before and could have brought my better camera. Oh, and that I could have arrived early enough to have a class of sparkling wine before the show!

My camera wasn't really up to the task, but the wall behind Rojas was beautiful... the heads are sculpted stone, but they fade into the wall and the bodies and gowns are mosaic...

Thanks for having me Melis! Sorry about the epic delay!

new in the shop!

Hey guys, it's been a while since I've both really updated this place or updated my Etsy shop. Today you're getting both, and a guest blog later today from Emily of Ruby Slipper Journeys, too! I've been super busy with being a good M.F.A. grad student and wedding planning that I've been neglecting this lovely little spot and I miss it, and you, my blog friends and lovely readers as well! :)

I've been accumulating new listings for the shop, HoneyBee Vintage but haven't had the time to take pictures and all that jazz. But my baby sister Maya is in town and I had her be my model and it went super quickly. She is a cute thing, no? So, here you go! Some new offerings for you all. Cozy sweaters, and pleated pants, and flowy skirts, oh my!

Ivory Cable Knit Fisherman Pullover (almost exactly like the Alexa Chung for Madewell one, but for a fraction of the cost! And cuter, in my opinion.)
